In “Ceto,” Rocío Mazuecos immerses us in a mythological and marine universe through a print filled with deep, enigmatic atmosphere. Dominated by intense blue tones, the vertical format encloses a female figure with classical features, closed eyes, and a serene expression, emerging from the darkness like an ancestral icon. This figure appears to float or rest within a whirlpool of surrounding sea creatures—fantastical fish, serpentine forms, and aquatic textures that evoke the mystery of the deep.
The piece takes its title from Ceto, a sea deity from Greek mythology, mother of sea monsters, adding a symbolic dimension to the scene: the sea as origin, the feminine as ancestral power, and the abyss as a place of creation and transformation. The creatures surrounding the figure are not hostile; rather, they seem to be part of her, reinforcing the idea of a fusion between body, water, and myth.
Mazuecos masterfully uses contrast between darkness and touches of light to create volume and drama, while the meticulous and detailed rendering of the marine beings reveals a deep attention to the organic and the symbolic. The result is a powerful image, filled with stillness and tension, inviting contemplation and inner journey.
